Gávea is a middle class neighborhood located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The name is a reference to Pedra da Gávea (Gávea’s Stone, located in São Conrado neighborhood) of which shape is very similar to a ship’s topsail.
But, this is not the only attraction of this noble neighborhood. Every Sunday at Praça Santos Dumont (Santos Dumont Square) there is an Antiques Market from 09:00am to 05:00pm normally visited by collectionists, curious people, nostalgic people and also tourists. The market is promoted by ABA (Antiques Brazilian Association) since 1997 and the stands sale carpets, porcelain goods, silverware and old stuff as 70’s cloths, and artists go there to expose their work like paintings and sculptures.
Right in front of it, on the number 108, is located the Hipódromo Bar, a very traditional place. Their specialty is meat, especially steak. This is a great option to have lunch after visiting the market.
This and other bars in Praça Santos Dumont like Dilmas’ Bar and Bar do Alemão are part of Baixo Gávea where many young people, celebrities and beautiful people go every Monday and Thursday night.
The BG – how Cariocas call the place – had very good parties in the past like “segunda-feira sem lei” (Monday without law) when the party used to last all night. Now the prefecture ordered that all bars must close their doors at 01:00am to keep the silence for all the people who need to work the day after. Rio is a fun city, but not everybody here is on vacation!
So, during the night or during the day, Gávea is a place neither locals nor visitors should miss out on!
